Floppy disk drives typically occupy an internal drive bay. They may also be an external unit, connected to the computer through |cables|. An external housing of sturdy plastic or metal protects the internal components from damage. These units have a floppy diskette slot, indicator lights, air vents, and a connector on the back for the cable. External drives are useful when no drive bays are available in the system unit. The drive shown is for a |3 1/2" diskette|, though 5 1/4" drives are common.
